On January 12, 2010 at 4:53 PM local time, an earthquake of 7.0 magnitude occurred 25 km WSW of Port-au-Prince. Current estimates place the number of deaths at nearly 200,000. The physician community of Colorado Springs responded to the medical needs of the victims and quickly organized a medical mission trip to Haiti. The group of 16 orthopaedic surgeons, trauma surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses including Dr Rick Meinig and Dr Paul Rahill of Front Range Orthopaedics arrived in Port-au-Prince on January 25. We were proceded by fellow Colorado surgeons Andy Mote, Ron Hugate, and Jim Smith. We combined efforts with teams from Summit County, Colorado, Florida, and St George, Utah to perform as many limb salvage surgeries as possible at the heavily damgaged CDTI hospital.
Due to the overwhelming request of the community, we are sharing some of their experiences below.
